Baby name rankings
Popularity data comes from the yearly name survey published by Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance: the top 10 names for each year from 1912 to 2003, and the top 100 names and top 50 readings from 2004. Readings for spellings are matched by us and checked by our reviewer.
Names of real people
Given names and surnames carried by notable Japanese people, the number of people who share them, and the famous people listed on name pages come from Wikidata, which is published under CC0. Readings are only added when they match a known reading of the kanji.
Pet names
Pet name rankings come from the Daiichi ipet survey of pets insured from April 2025 to March 2026, as reported by SoraNews24.
Surnames
The ranking and estimates for the 100 most common surnames come from Meiji Yasuda's 2008 national surname survey, as listed on Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0).
Names in katakana
The name converter uses US baby name data from the Social Security Administration (public domain) and pronunciations from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (BSD licence), with standard Japanese spellings checked by hand for the most common names.
